Build a life table computation routine

Practice computing q_x, p_x, e_x (complete and curtate) from life tables until these calculations are automatic. Every subsequent topic builds on life table fluency.

Master the relationship between A_x and a-double-dot_x

The identity A_x = 1 - d * a-double-dot_x (and its term and endowment variants) is one of the most important on the exam. It lets you convert between insurance and annuity values quickly.

Practice recursive reserve formulas

The recursion tV + P = v * (q_{x+t} * b_{t+1} + p_{x+t} * (t+1)V) is fundamental. Practice building reserve tables row by row for whole life and term insurance policies.

Study fractional age assumptions carefully

Know the difference between UDD (uniform distribution of deaths) and constant force assumptions. Each leads to different interpolation formulas for tpx at fractional ages.

Draw Markov chain diagrams for multiple-decrement models

Multi-state models become clearer when you draw the state diagram with transition intensities. Label each arrow with its force of transition and write out the Kolmogorov equations.

LTAM has a written-answer section. Practice writing structured solutions with clearly labeled steps. Partial credit is available, so showing your work systematically matters.

Understand pension valuation formulas

Know the difference between career-average and final-average benefit formulas. Practice computing the actuarial present value of pension benefits using service tables and salary scales.

Study profit testing for life insurance products

Profit testing involves projecting premiums, claims, expenses, and reserves year by year. Practice building profit signature vectors for simple whole life and term products.

Review the SOA study note on multiple-life functions

Joint-life and last-survivor functions have many identities. Create a formula sheet linking T(xy), T(x-bar-y), and the individual lifetimes.

Allocate study time proportional to topic weights

Reserves and premiums together make up about 30% of the exam. Ensure you spend at least 30% of your study time on these topics rather than over-investing in the more interesting but lower-weighted areas.
