FM Exam Day Guide
Everything you need to know before sitting for Exam FM: Financial Mathematics. Testing center logistics, time management, and strategies for performing your best on exam day.
Arrive 30 minutes early with proper ID
Bring two forms of valid identification. One must have a photo and signature. The testing center staff will verify your identity and photograph you before you enter the testing room.
Bring your approved calculator
Exam FM permits the BA-II Plus and BA-II Plus Professional (and the TI-30X IIS/IIB as alternatives). Bring your own calculator with fresh batteries. The testing center does not provide calculators. No calculator covers or instruction cards are allowed.
Reset your calculator at the start
Before starting any problems, reset your BA-II Plus to clear any stored values. Set the decimal display to floating (2nd FORMAT, DEC = 9). Verify that P/Y and C/Y are both set to 1. This prevents errors from previous calculations.
Do a formula brain dump immediately
Spend 3 minutes at the start writing down key formulas: annuity factors, bond pricing, duration and convexity, put-call parity, and the relationship between nominal, effective, and force of interest. This frees mental bandwidth.
Use the TVM worksheet for annuity and loan problems
The BA-II Plus TVM worksheet handles most annuity and loan calculations in seconds. Practice entering N, I/Y, PV, PMT, and FV until it is second nature. Know when to use BGN mode for annuities-due.
Pace yourself at 5.5 minutes per question
With 30 questions in 180 minutes, aim for 5.5 minutes each. This leaves 15 minutes at the end for review. If a problem takes longer than 7 minutes, flag it and move on.
Watch for interest rate traps
Problems often give a nominal rate when you need an effective rate, or vice versa. Always identify the compounding frequency and convert before computing. This is the most common source of errors on FM.
Double-check bond pricing problems
Bond problems involve multiple cash flow streams (coupons plus redemption). Verify that you are using the correct coupon rate, yield rate, and number of periods. A mismatch between semiannual and annual rates can throw off your answer.
Manage your energy and take mental breaks
Even though FM allows no scheduled breaks, you can pause between problems to close your eyes for 10 seconds. The 3-hour sitting is mentally taxing and brief resets help maintain accuracy.
After the exam
Your preliminary result appears on screen immediately. A passing score is typically around 70% (the exact threshold varies by sitting). If you do not pass, use the topic-level feedback to target your weakest areas before retaking.
