What to Do After Failing an Actuarial Exam
Practical steps for recovering from a failed actuarial exam and improving your chances next time.
Processing the Result
Failing an actuarial exam is common. Pass rates for preliminary exams typically range from 30% to 50%. Allow yourself a few days to feel disappointed, then shift to analysis mode. Review your diagnostic report if available to identify which topics were weakest. Talk to colleagues who have been through the same experience since nearly every credentialed actuary has failed at least one exam.
Building a Better Plan
Identify what went wrong: insufficient study hours, wrong study materials, poor time management during the exam, or gaps in specific topics. Adjust your approach rather than simply repeating the same plan. Consider switching study manuals if the previous one did not work for your learning style. Increase practice exam volume. If you were close to passing, a targeted review of weak areas may be enough. If you were far from passing, consider whether you need a fundamentally different study approach or more total preparation time.
