Transitioning from SOA to CAS (or Vice Versa)

What to consider when switching between the SOA and CAS actuarial credentialing tracks.

When Transitions Happen

Actuaries sometimes switch between SOA and CAS tracks when they change jobs, discover a different interest area, or find better career opportunities in the other track. The earlier you switch, the less work you lose. Exams P and FM transfer directly between organizations. Beyond those, transition credit policies determine what additional credit you receive. Both organizations periodically update their transition rules, so check the current policies before planning your switch.

Practical Considerations

Switching after earning your associateship is more complex and may require additional exams in the new organization's track-specific material. Consider whether the career benefit of switching justifies the time cost of additional exams. Talk to actuaries who have made the transition for practical advice. Some employers support both tracks, making the switch easier from a workplace perspective. If you are early in your career with only preliminary exams passed, the cost of switching is minimal. If you are near fellowship, the cost is substantial and should be weighed carefully against the career benefits.
