The Complete SOA FSA Certification Pathway
A guide to earning the Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) designation after completing ASA requirements.
Choosing Your Track
After earning your ASA, you choose a fellowship track based on your career focus: Corporate Finance and ERM, Quantitative Finance and Investment, Individual Life and Annuities, Retirement Benefits, Group and Health, or General Insurance. Each track has its own set of fellowship exams and modules tailored to that practice area. Your track choice should align with your current role and long-term career interests.
Fellowship Requirements
FSA candidates must pass two to three additional exams depending on the track, complete fellowship modules (similar to FAP but more advanced), and attend the Fellowship Admissions Course (FAC). Fellowship exams are more comprehensive and often include written-answer components alongside multiple choice. The FSA process typically takes an additional two to four years beyond ASA. Many candidates find fellowship exams more challenging because the material is less standardized and requires deeper professional judgment. Employer support and mentorship from existing FSAs are particularly valuable at this stage.
