The Actuarial Internship Experience: What to Expect
What a typical actuarial internship looks like and how to make the most of the experience.
Day-to-Day Work
As an actuarial intern, you will work on real projects alongside credentialed actuaries. Common tasks include data analysis in Excel, updating actuarial models, running reserve calculations, preparing exhibits for rate filings, and creating presentations. You will attend team meetings and may shadow actuaries in different departments. Most internships last 10 to 12 weeks during the summer, with structured programs including training sessions, social events, and a final presentation.
Making the Most of It
Ask questions actively since your mentors expect curiosity from interns. Take detailed notes on processes and terminology. Volunteer for additional projects when your primary work allows. Network with actuaries across different departments and levels. Express interest in returning full-time if you enjoy the experience since many companies use internships as their primary pipeline for entry-level hiring. Document your accomplishments for your resume. An internship is both a learning experience and an extended interview, so demonstrate reliability, initiative, and a genuine interest in actuarial work throughout your time there.
