Pay-per-mile programs charge a per-mile rate, while pay-how-you-drive programs adjust premiums based on driving behavior scores. The granularity of telematics data represents a fundamental shift in auto insurance risk assessment.

Actuarial Challenges

Incorporating telematics data into pricing models presents several challenges. The volume and velocity of data require robust data engineering pipelines. Feature engineering (extracting meaningful predictive variables from raw sensor data) is a critical step that combines actuarial judgment with data science techniques. Self-selection bias (safer drivers are more likely to opt into telematics programs) must be accounted for in rating analysis. Privacy concerns and regulatory restrictions on data use vary by jurisdiction. Actuaries must also consider how telematics scores interact with traditional rating variables and whether the resulting rates are actuarially fair and not unfairly discriminatory.
