Study Strategy: Breadth vs. Depth for Actuarial Exams

How to balance covering all exam topics with deep mastery of individual topics.

The Breadth Approach

Covering every topic on the syllabus ensures you can attempt every question on exam day. Since exam questions are spread across the entire syllabus, skipping topics means guaranteed lost points. A breadth-first approach covers all material at a functional level before going deep on any single topic. This is especially important for exams with many short questions where partial knowledge across all topics outperforms deep knowledge of only some.

When to Go Deep

After achieving baseline coverage, invest deeper study time in high-weight topics as indicated by the syllabus learning objectives. If the syllabus allocates 20% of the exam to a topic, that topic deserves proportionally more study time than one weighted at 5%. Also go deep on topics you find most difficult since those represent your biggest potential score improvements. The optimal strategy is breadth first, then targeted depth based on topic weight and personal weakness.
