Starting Actuarial Exams After College: A Career Changer's Guide

How to transition into the actuarial profession after college when coming from a different career.

Assessing Your Starting Point

Career changers come from diverse backgrounds. If you have a quantitative degree (engineering, physics, economics), you likely have the math foundation to begin exam preparation immediately. If your background is less quantitative, consider taking prerequisite courses in calculus and probability before starting exams. Evaluate your financial situation since the career transition may involve a temporary income reduction. Research the profession thoroughly by informational interviewing with practicing actuaries to confirm it aligns with your interests and goals.

Building Your Plan

Pass your first exam as quickly as possible to demonstrate commitment to employers. Many career changers pass Exam P or FM within three to six months of focused study while still employed in their current role. After passing one or two exams, begin applying for entry-level actuarial positions. Emphasize transferable skills from your previous career: project management, communication, industry knowledge, or technical abilities. Be prepared for a potential salary adjustment if your previous career paid significantly more or less. Most employers value the maturity and diverse perspective that career changers bring to actuarial teams.
