SOA vs. CAS: Which Actuarial Path Is Right for You?

A comprehensive comparison of the SOA and CAS credentialing paths to help you choose the right actuarial career track.

Key Differences

The Society of Actuaries (SOA) focuses on life insurance, health insurance, retirement benefits, and finance. The Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) focuses on property and casualty insurance including auto, homeowners, and commercial lines. Both organizations share the first two preliminary exams (P and FM), but diverge after that. The SOA offers multiple fellowship tracks, while the CAS has a single credential path focused on P&C.

Choosing Your Path

Consider which types of insurance interest you. If you want to work in life insurance, pensions, or health insurance, the SOA is your path. If auto, property, or liability insurance excites you, choose the CAS. Your employer's preference matters too since most insurance companies are primarily SOA or CAS shops. Geography plays a role: CAS actuaries are more concentrated in certain metro areas with large P&C insurers. Talk to actuaries in both tracks before committing, and remember that the preliminary exams apply to both paths.
