Self-Assessment: How to Evaluate Your Exam Readiness
Methods for honestly assessing whether you are ready to sit for your actuarial exam.
Quantitative Indicators
Track your practice exam scores over time. For most preliminary exams, consistently scoring above 70% on practice exams suggests readiness, since practice exams tend to be slightly harder than the real thing. The Coaching Actuaries Earned Level system provides a calibrated readiness metric. Another indicator is the percentage of syllabus topics where you can solve problems without referring to notes.
Qualitative Indicators
You are ready when you can explain core concepts from memory without prompting. You should be able to identify the appropriate technique for a problem before starting calculations. You should feel confident about your time management strategy from practicing under timed conditions. If you still have significant topic gaps or your practice scores are not improving, postponing the exam may be wiser than attempting it underprepared. A realistic self-assessment saves time and money compared to a failed attempt.
