Salary Expectations by Exam Count and Experience Level

A guide to actuarial salary ranges based on exam progress, credentials, and years of experience.

Entry-Level Through ASA/ACAS

Entry-level actuarial analysts with zero to two exams typically earn between $55,000 and $75,000 depending on location and company size. Each passed exam generally adds $5,000 to $15,000 through exam raises and increased market value. An ASA or ACAS with three to five years of experience typically earns $80,000 to $120,000. Geographic location significantly affects compensation, with major metro areas offering higher salaries to offset cost of living.

FSA/FCAS and Senior Roles

Fellows with five to ten years of experience typically earn $120,000 to $200,000. Senior actuaries, chief actuaries, and actuarial directors at large companies can earn $200,000 to $400,000 or more. Consulting roles often pay premiums over insurance company positions. Beyond base salary, total compensation includes exam support (study time, materials, exam fees, and pass bonuses), annual bonuses of 10% to 25%, and retirement benefits. The actuarial profession consistently ranks among the top careers for compensation relative to education requirements and job satisfaction.
