Mock Exams: How to Use Practice Tests Effectively

Strategies for getting the most value from practice exams during actuarial exam preparation.

When to Start Taking Practice Exams

Wait until you have covered at least 70% of the syllabus before taking your first full practice exam. Taking practice tests too early leads to discouragement and wastes valuable questions. Start with untimed section quizzes as you study each topic, then transition to full-length timed exams in the final four to six weeks of preparation.

Maximizing Learning from Each Exam

Simulate real exam conditions: timed, no notes, no interruptions. After completing the exam, wait at least a few hours before reviewing answers so you can assess your honest performance. Score the exam and record your results. Review every question, not just the ones you got wrong, because you might have gotten a question right for the wrong reason. Take at least five to eight full practice exams before the real thing. Track your scores over time to see your improvement trajectory and determine if you are on pace to pass.
