Managing Actuarial Exam Anxiety
Techniques for managing test anxiety before and during actuarial exams.
Understanding Exam Anxiety
Some anxiety before an exam is normal and can even improve performance by increasing focus. However, excessive anxiety impairs working memory, making it harder to recall formulas and solve problems. Common symptoms include racing thoughts, difficulty concentrating, and physical tension. Recognizing that anxiety is a normal response, not a sign of unpreparedness, is the first step toward managing it.
Practical Coping Strategies
Preparation is the best anxiety reducer: thorough study builds genuine confidence. Beyond preparation, practice deep breathing exercises during study sessions so they become automatic on exam day. Visualize yourself calmly working through the exam. During the exam, if anxiety spikes, pause for 30 seconds of slow breathing before continuing. Start with questions you know well to build momentum and confidence. Avoid comparing your pace to other test-takers in the room. Focus only on the question in front of you.
