How to Study for Two Exams at Once
Guidelines for simultaneously preparing for two actuarial exams when timing demands it.
When It Makes Sense
Studying for two exams simultaneously is occasionally necessary when exam windows overlap or when you want to accelerate your progress. It works best when the two exams share foundational material or when you have strong preparation in one and only need review. Exams P and FM are the most common pairing since their content does not overlap, reducing interference.
How to Manage It
Stagger your exam dates by at least four to six weeks so your peak study periods do not overlap. Allocate 60% of your time to the earlier exam and 40% to the later one, shifting as dates approach. Study each exam in separate sessions to maintain context. Avoid switching between exams within a single study session since the context-switching cost is high for technical material. Be realistic about the increased total time commitment and accept that your preparation for each exam may be slightly less thorough than if you studied for them individually.
