How to Restart After a Long Study Break

Strategies for resuming actuarial exam preparation after an extended break from studying.

Assessing Where You Stand

After a break of several months or longer, you have likely forgotten a significant portion of what you studied. This is normal. Start by taking a diagnostic quiz or partial practice exam to assess your current knowledge level. Compare your results against where you were before the break. You will probably find that some topics come back quickly while others feel completely unfamiliar. This assessment guides how to allocate your time going forward.

Rebuilding Momentum

Do not try to restart exactly where you left off. Instead, spend the first one to two weeks on a rapid review of all previously studied material. Skim your notes and summary sheets. Work a few practice problems from each topic. This primes your memory and accelerates relearning, which research shows is faster than initial learning. Once your rapid review is complete, build a new study schedule from the present, treating your break as a sunk cost. Start with small daily commitments to rebuild the study habit before ramping up to full intensity.
