How Many Exams Before You Can Get Hired?

The number of actuarial exams typically needed to land your first actuarial position.

The General Rule

Most entry-level actuarial positions require one to two passed exams, with two being the most competitive target. Candidates with zero exams can sometimes find actuarial-adjacent roles such as data analyst or actuarial assistant positions, but dedicated actuarial analyst roles typically require demonstrated exam progress. Three or more exams may be expected for candidates without internship experience or for positions in competitive markets.

Factors That Affect the Number

Strong internship experience can compensate for fewer exams. A degree from a recognized actuarial science program may carry more weight than an extra exam from an unrelated degree. Geographic location matters: competitive metro areas may require more exams while smaller markets or less well-known companies may hire with fewer. Technical skills in programming, SQL, and data analysis can differentiate you from candidates with similar exam counts. The best approach is to pass exams as quickly as you can while simultaneously building technical skills and gaining relevant experience through internships or related roles.
