Most actuarial preliminary exams are offered during multiple windows throughout the year. Exams P and FM are available nearly continuously through CBT (computer-based testing) windows. Other preliminary exams have specific sitting dates, typically in spring and fall. Choosing between sittings involves balancing study readiness, work schedules, and personal commitments. Spring sittings (typically April to June) allow candidates who start studying in January to have a full study cycle. Fall sittings (September to November) work well for those beginning preparation in the summer.

Strategic Considerations

Several factors influence optimal timing. If you are a student, aligning exam preparation with academic semesters that cover related material provides reinforcement. Working candidates should consider busy seasons at their employer (avoiding studying during year-end close for insurance companies, for example). Taking exams too close together risks burnout, while spacing them too far apart slows credential progress. A common approach is sitting for two exams per year (one per major window), allowing adequate study time for each while maintaining steady progress. If you fail an exam, the next available sitting should be your target retake date.
