Exam MAS-II vs. Exam STAM: Key Differences

A comparison of Exam MAS-II and the retired Exam STAM, covering scope, format, and preparation differences.

Scope and Content

Exam STAM (Short-Term Actuarial Mathematics) covered loss models, credibility, and pricing for short-term insurance. Exam MAS-II (Modern Actuarial Statistics II) replaced STAM with a broader focus on advanced statistical methods, predictive modeling, and machine learning applied to insurance. MAS-II adds topics like GLMs, decision trees, random forests, gradient boosting, and model selection that STAM did not cover.

Format and Preparation

STAM was a multiple-choice exam with some constructed response. MAS-II places greater emphasis on applied modeling concepts and interpretation. Study materials for MAS-II draw more from data science and machine learning textbooks, while STAM relied on traditional actuarial loss models texts. If you previously studied for STAM, you have a foundation in loss distributions and credibility that transfers directly. However, you will need to invest significant additional time learning predictive modeling techniques, coding concepts, and model validation methods that are unique to MAS-II.
