Calculator Comparison for Actuarial Exams

Comparing approved calculators for actuarial exams and tips for maximizing calculator efficiency.

Approved Calculator Options

The SOA and CAS approve specific calculator models for use on exams. The two primary options are the Texas Instruments BA-II Plus (including the Professional version) and the TI-30XS MultiView. The BA-II Plus is the traditional choice for actuarial exams, with built-in financial functions for time value of money, amortization, and cash flow analysis. The TI-30XS MultiView offers a multi-line display and strong scientific functions but lacks dedicated financial keys. Some candidates carry both to exams that permit it.

Choosing and Mastering Your Calculator

For Exam FM and any exam with financial mathematics content, the BA-II Plus is strongly recommended due to its TVM (time value of money) worksheet, amortization functions, and IRR/NPV capabilities. These built-in features save significant time compared to manual calculation. For Exam P and statistics-heavy exams, either calculator works well. The most important factor is mastery through practice. Learn all relevant shortcuts, secondary functions, and memory features. Practice every calculation technique you will need during the exam. A calculator you know thoroughly is worth more than a "better" calculator you are still learning on exam day.
