Essential Resume Elements
List passed exams prominently near the top of your resume, including the exam name, date passed, and any exams you are currently studying for. Include your GPA if it is above 3.2. List technical skills: Excel, programming languages (R, Python, SQL, VBA), and any actuarial software experience. Quantify your accomplishments wherever possible. "Reduced processing time by 40% through VBA automation" is much stronger than "used VBA for automation."
Tailoring for Impact
Customize your resume for each position. Emphasize life and health experience for SOA-track roles and P&C experience for CAS-track roles. Use actuarial terminology appropriately but do not overload with jargon. Keep your resume to one page for entry-level positions. Include relevant coursework if you lack professional experience. Leadership roles in actuarial clubs, math competitions, or relevant projects demonstrate initiative. Have an experienced actuary review your resume before submitting applications. A well-crafted resume that clearly communicates your exam progress and quantitative skills opens doors to interviews.
